Wordpress 2.0 Released
December 26th, 2005 by Chad
Wordpress.org released version 2.0 of its increasingly-popular Wordpress blogging software. Among its new features:
- Rich-Text Editor: This is a sort of MS Word-like interface for writing and editing blog posts. It seems nice, but as i understand it, it’s not without its flaws, such as non-Safari functionality and poor HTML code generation.
- Anti-Comment-Spam: Before upgrading to WP 2.0, I was using Spam Karma 2 - Reloaded to handle comment spam. WP 2.0 includes Akismet, which is a nice little plugin that takes care of catching comment spam. After upgrading, it was refreshing to see that it detected all the comment spam that was already in my database, that SK2 previously detected.
- Capabilities and Roles: Earlier versions of Wordpress assigned numeric “User Levels” to users of the system. This created all kinds of confusion with what user levels had permission to do what. Now WP 2.0 has completely changed this to a more logical title-based user capability/role system. This just makes more sense. More info on this can be found at Ryan Boren’s blog.
These are just a few of the latest features to bless Wordpress 2.0. Also of note is the vast amount of AJAX in the Administration section. Purty.
